Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the first oldest Greek-letter organization. It was established in America by black college-trained women.  It was founded in 1908 by nine students on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. This is where Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri, conceived this idea.  Five years after it’s founding, on January 29, 1913, the eternity of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was ensured through its incorporation.

Alpha Kappa Alpha has gradually branched out and has become the channel through which selected college-trained women improve the socioeconomic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world. Alpha Kappa Alpha is an organization that helps to penetrate against racial, national, physical and social barriers.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is an organization composed of thousands of Africa American, college-trained women. We are bound by our motto “Service to All Mankind.” The main purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, and to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social status.
